Farewell Fixed

FarewellFixed-3.jpg

I wanted to take a moment today, one small business to another, to highlight and appreciate Fixed Coffee & Baking which has its last day tomorrow after 7 years of being a cornerstone of culture in Downtown St. John’s.

As sad as it felt, myself and Nathan Eddy Photography knew we had to go down today to show our support. We ordered their delicious hot chocolate, ate INSANE bagel sandwiches, and took photos of every nook and cranny to commemorate this treasure.

As a wedding photographer, I am very used to the feeling and honour of documenting someone’s once in a lifetime moments on their big day, but it was a really surreal feeling documenting Fixed and knowing that in just over 24 hours it would be left for us to cherish in our memories. It was a reminder of one of the reasons photography is my passion- helping people around me carry places, experiences, and memories into their future. Helping us immortalize what’s important. It was also a reminder that this is the reality for far too many local businesses in downtown St. John’s.

We have a vibrant city HEAVY with locally owned businesses, makers & crafters, small shops, and entrepreneurs. We have a history as a people of being self sustaining and ingenious in the face of adversity- because we had to be. We continue to be. We have an inordinate amount of entrepreneurs, self employed people, and local business compared to our small population.

St. John’s would be NOTHING without our downtown core. It houses nearly all our locally owned specialty businesses and shops. It teems with local restaurants, music, and culture that draw people here. Without downtown St. John’s, tourism as we know it (which sustains ALL of us, not just entrepreneurs) wouldn’t exist. It’s the the heart of our city.

I know I speak for so many when I say that Fixed is an incredibly special place with a lot of warmth, safety, and talent, where everyone could go to work, connect, and enjoy their time.

Please take the initiative to support our local small businesses. Go out of your way to do so, even when parking or driving downtown is the less convenient option. Share people’s posts and be their online cheerleaders. When you support a local business and local services, you are literally putting food on people’s table, helping us directly pay our bills and live our life just like you’re doing too. Instead of sitting behind a big CEO chair we do a happy dance and thank the universe for our dream. We thank YOU for our dream.

Farewell Fixed, hope to see you again someday.

Brian and Shawn. Decades together, deep friendship & beautiful love, and now husbands.

Spent an afternoon with these joyful souls last fall making it official. Their intimate elopement on the dockside of St. John's brought tears to everyone's eyes, including mine- but that's no shock.

Enjoy this little glimpse into their story. XO

Signing their marriage document and smiling ear to ear. Love my job so much.

Claudia & Enrico's Wedding at Yellowbelly in St. John's // Newfoundland Wedding Photographer

Life has a funny way of working itself out. No matter the hardships, the heartache, and the twisting path you took to get here today, sometimes you meet someone who changes everything.

Claudia and Enrico's love was each other's saving grace, and I was so honoured to spend a rainy (understatement) November day with them and their beautiful family to celebrate their wedding. It poured cats and dogs people, I don't know how else to explain it, but that only added to the magic that surrounds this couple.

They ran through the rain, danced under the golden glow of string lights, and shared their love for everyone so fiercely. I can't think of a better way for them to have began the rest of their lives together than what you're about to witness below. xo

When you come home to Newfoundland for the holidays, there's no better way to be greeted than with a snowstorm!

Stephanie and Brent totally rocked their engagement session in the snow, and had an absolute blast doing it- just the way it should be. Love couples who let their silly shine through (and not only because it makes me feel more comfortable being my dorky self)!

Enjoy their adventure below!

Thanks for having me Stephanie & Brent! Can't wait for the wedding this year! xo- Maddie

Lori & John's Downtown St. John's Couples Session // Newfoundland Engagement Photographers

Being in love. It's when you smile so hard that your face hurts, when you dance even when EVERYONE is watching, and when your heart beats with warmth that radiates throughout your whole entire soul.

It was a beautiful evening in Downtown St. John's, and right around the corner from Lori and John's place a little Newfoundland fairytale came to life. First stop- Fred's Records, because where else??

Then, it was back up the road to their place, for some cozy times on their deck overlooking St. John's :) Note the Ariel and Captain America mugs. Score.

An evening walk a day keeps the doctor away!

You are the moonlight of my life every night
Giving all my love to you
My beating heart belongs to you
I walked for miles 'til I found you
I'm here to honor you
If I lose everything in the fire
I'm sending all my love to you

St. John's Engagement Photographers // Sheila and Cory Engaged

This engagement was 12 years in the making!

From their first jive at Sundance to their first hot chocolate at Tim Horton's, Sheila and Cory were nuts for one another. 12 years later and here they are!

It was a pleasure to shoot with you both and I wish you so much love in your marriage!

Mommy and Me // St. John's Family Photographers

Alicia is an amazing woman who is raising an equally amazing (and adorable!) little girl. It's just shy of Baby K's first birthday, and this pair has never had photos taken together.. Until now! :)

I already photographed the family of Alicia's older sister, and am doing their wedding this fall as well, so it fit just right when this mama came to me looking for a session!

Happy tears were shed at their reveal appointment, and the bond these two have is something so special to witness! Thanks again, Alicia!

Sarah + Bree / Same Sex Couple's Session / St. John's Engagement Photographers

Two girls on opposite ends of the world. From Newfoundland and Australia, this is a love story for the books, people. A mutual follow online and a love connection later, the girl from Down Under spent Christmas here with Sarah 3 years ago and the rest was history.

On a pretty chilly day in Downtown St. John's I had the pleasure to photograph these wonderful souls. Pictured is Sarah Hall of Sarah Hall Photography, and her lovely girlfriend Bree. We frolicked on the rooftop and then warmed up with some of that liquid gold hot chocolate courtesy of Second Cup Downtown St. John's. :)
